FLORIDA RAMBLERS FIRE SAFETY
April 2008
Rehearse in your minds your reaction to a serious fire.
GET OUT! Depending on the location, via door or escape window in the sleeping area.
Smoke alarms – Have one in the sleeping area as well as the front of the coach. Check them out before each trip to make sure they are in good working order.
Fire Extinguishers – One should be in sleeping area and one near the entrance door, both in good working order. It is recommended that you turn them upside down for a little while periodically to avoid all chemicals settling to the bottom.
While Traveling – Men keep your wallet in your pocket even though it might be uncomfortable. Ladies, place your purse next to exit door. Leave your keys in the tow vehicle unlocked. You can use your extra set of keys to lock your tow vehicle when you stop to rest, lunch or shopping. Then remember to unlock when you are ready to travel again.
While Parked – During the day you should keep your purse and keys next to exit (perhaps just inside a dish cabinet if you wish to get them out of sight).
When you retire for the night hang a small tote bag on a hook next to your emergency exit window and place a set of tow car keys, coach keys, purse, wallet and valuables in that bag. It can be grabbed and tossed out the window or taken with you as you exit the front door. While parked in an RV park, if it is possible, park the tow vehicle behind the MH, incase you need to quickly move the MH away from an emergency next to you. One more reason to keep those tow vehicle keys handy.
Other safety tips
Carbon Monoxide – It is a good idea to keep one in each end of a coach, especially if your engine is in one end and the generator is in the other. Check them before each trip. Is it safe to sleep with the generator running? I would not like to do that.

Gas – The LP folks tell you to turn the main switch off before traveling. There is some controversy on that, but it sounds like a good idea. This would mean if you are not running the generator, your refrigerator will be off while on the road. In most cases, if you do not open that door much, it will stay cold.
Hook Ups for Tow Vehicle – Do everything you can to make your disconnect quickly. Snap hooks instead of screw type for your safety cables are good. Practice your efficiency at this. This can save your tow vehicle from a fire or a disaster in the event of an accident on the highway
Electric appliances and extension cords – Check the condition of your cords frequently. A loose wire or plug can overheat and easily start a fire. When operating your slides, double check to be sure no cords are in danger of being caught and damaged causing a short. All small appliances should be unplugged when not in use. Sunbeam does NOT recommend electric blankets for motor homes, especially for use with a generator.
While in an RV park, if it is possible park your tow vehicle behind the motor home in case it is necessary to move out quickly from an emergency next to you. No matter where the two vehicle is parked, have your keys by the door (or in the tote bag at night) in case it is necessary to move it quickly.
